Program Overview
Becoming a Canadian citizen is an important milestone for permanent residents who want to fully participate in Canada’s social, cultural, and political life. Citizenship offers additional rights, responsibilities, and the opportunity to carry one of the world’s most respected passports.

Program Requirements
You may be eligible for Canadian citizenship if you
- You are a permanent resident of Canada.
- Have lived in Canada for at least 3 years (1,095 days) out of the last 5 years before applying.
- at least two years must be spent physically inside Canada as a permanent resident,
and
- at least one more year spent as a permanent resident, OR two years as a temporary resident, OR a combination of the two
- Have filed your taxes for at least 3 years, if required.
- Meet the language requirements in English or French (if you are between 18 and 54 years old).
- Pass a citizenship test on Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols (if you are between 18 and 54 years old).
- Are not under a removal order, facing criminal charges, or serving a sentence.
Application Process
- Check your eligibility and gather supporting documents (e.g., PR card, travel history, proof of language ability).
- Submit your citizenship application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
- If required, take the citizenship test and attend an interview.
- Receive your citizenship decision.
- Take the Oath of Citizenship at a citizenship ceremony and receive your certificate.
Once you become a citizen, you’ll be eligible to apply for a Canadian passport.
